A visit to 56 Central Restaurant to see our Old Marriage Stone located in our stairwell is a must for all bride and grooms to-be. Years ago, marriage stones were very popular when two families married and were often the setting of many Irish engagements and wedding oaths.
According to a local Cork historian, ‘the hole in the stone is narrow on one side and wide on the other. The man had a bigger hand and he put his hand through the wide side and the woman put her hand through the narrow side. They made their promises when they put their hands through the stone.’
Nowadays, there are only a few remaining holed stones in Ireland with several still standing in their original places in Antrim, Cork, and Louth. It’s not uncommon to see many of the budding brides-to-be or nervous groomsmen who visit us here at 56 Central Restaurant passing by the stone to rub it on their way out in the hopes that it will help to grant them a long and joyful marriage. It’s a great way to add a quirky touch to your bride’s day to ensure it’s one she will not forget in a hurry, as well as a nice way to wish her luck for the big day!
